Preparatory German courses

for international students with and without a refugee background

The university's own German language centre PunktUm offers a free language course for international students with and without a refugee background and prepares you specifically and intensively for the language requirements for university admission.

Course places are allocated in accordance with the guidelines and with funding from the Ministry of Culture and Science of the State of North Rhine-Westphalia (MKW).

  • Intensive TestDaF preparation course (24 hours/week)
  • Level B2-C1 up to the university entrance exam
  • Intensive support incl. accompanying lessons and social programme
  • Enrolment as a language course student (social fee per semester, you can find the current amount here).
  • Duration: March-August (summer semester), September-February (winter semester)

In order to be able to prove your university entrance qualification, you will need the following documents, which must be submitted in the original language and translated during the history of the application process. Please endeavour to obtain a translation in good time.

  • Abitur certificate
  • List of grades from (German) 'Abitur'
  • Bachelor's or Master's degree certificate
  • Bachelor's or Master's transcript
  • Provisional transcript if the BA/MA is not yet completed and you are still studying abroad
  • Curriculum vitae

Persons with the following status are eligible to participate:

- Persons entitled to asylum, recognised refugees or subsidiary protection
- Residence permit pursuant to Sections 22, 23 (1) and (2), 23 (4), 23a, 24, 25 (1-3), 25 (4) or (5) AufenthG
- Tolerated persons pursuant to Section 60a (2) AufenthG


 

Excluded are persons with:

- Obligation to leave the country (Sections 50 (1) and 60a AufenthG) or authorisation to stay (Section 55 AufenthG)
- Family reunification
- Domestic educational qualification
- Settlement permit
- German nationality

 

We accept all common, internationally recognised B1 language certificates for applications.

These include, in particular, certificates from Telc, Goethe-Institut and ÖSD, as long as the level achieved is clearly marked as B1.
Other recognised certificates can also be considered in individual cases.
